The oil spill that wreaked havoc in the Kerch Strait leading to the Black Sea in early November will take at least 5 to 10 years for the marine environment to recover. The 2000-tonne spill has badly affected the local fishing industry. Fish caught in the Kerch Strait are not safe for consumption. The spill has also threatened birds. About 11 endangered species inhabit the area around the strait, including the Dalmatian pelican and great black-headed gull, and many more migrating birds will be wintering in this area in the coming months.

A new method for extracting oil is now at the forefront of plans to exploit a massive heavy oilfield in Canada. Unlike conventional light oil, heavy oil is very viscous, like syrup, or even solid in its natural state underground, making it very difficult to extract. But heavy oil reserves that could keep the planet’s oil-dependent economy going for a hundred years lie beneath the surface in many countries, especially in Canada.

Wind power, long considered to be as fickle as wind itself, can be groomed to become a steady, dependable source of electricity and delivered at a lower cost than at present, according to scientists. The key is connecting wind farms throughout a given geographic area with transmission lines, thus combining the electric outputs of the farms into one powerful energy source.

Don’t Judge A Brook By Its Color — Brown Waters Are More Natural

Over the last 20 years lakes and streams in remote parts of the UK, southern Scandinavia and eastern North America have been increasingly stained brown by dissolved organic matter. Now researchers demonstrates that the color change is indicative of a return to a more natural, pre-industrial state following a decline in the level of acid rain.

Local Sources Major Cause Of US Near-ground Aerosol Pollution

A new NASA study estimates that most ground-level particulate pollution in the US stems from regional sources in North America and only a small amount is brought to the country from other parts of the world. Researchers using an innovative global aerosol tracking model have for the first time produced a global estimate of sources and movements of aerosols near the ground where they can affect human health and run afoul of environmental regulations.
