Streams, lakes, and bays may soon be cleaner thanks to an innovative approach to managing storm-water runoff. A novel software application will help engineers and planners select the most efficient and site specific methods of controlling the amount of pollutants that enter the receiving waters through storm-water runoff. With old systems, pollutants are washed off the roads, parking lots, or other surfaces by storm-water, and include toxic motor oil, pesticides, metals, bacteria, and trash.

A new study provides some of the first evidence that albatrosses in the North Pacific may be affected by environmental contamination. Alterations in the immune function of the black-footed albatross were associated with elevated blood levels of nonpoint source contaminants. Non-point source pollution comes from a wide variety of sources such as farms, cars, roads and highways, and lawns. This kind of pollution is ubiquitous and can pose a significant threat to wildlife.

The pollution produced by light trucks, SUVs and minivans is only half a percent higher than that produced by conventional cars, based on a recent study. But researchers say that this tiny difference becomes enormous when considering the number of light trucks moving along the nation’s highways.

Women who lived in regions with high carbon monoxide or fine-particle levels — pollution caused mainly by vehicle traffic — were approximately 10 to 25 percent more likely to have a preterm baby than women who lived in less polluted areas. This was especially true for women who breathed polluted air during the first trimester or during the last months and weeks of pregnancy.

As a frequent addition to the list of America’s most polluted cities, Houston is no stranger to having more than just oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air. But a new study found a few surprising results in the air Houstonians breathe day in, day out: mercury and formaldehyde. This is the first time mercury has been measured in Houston’s air, and scientists are still trying to figure out what it’s coming from.

Researchers in Taiwan have demonstrated for the first time that urban air pollution simultaneously affects key indicators of cardiovascular risk in young adults: inflammation, oxidative stress, coagulation and autonomic dysfunction.
